What is Zyban?
Zyban is a brand name for the drug bupropion hydrochloride. Bupropion hydrochloride, marketed under the names of Zyban®. Wellbutrin® SR and Wellbutrin® XL by GSK (GlaxoSmithKline) is a prescription strength anti-depressant medicine also used to help people quit smoking. Wellbutrin SR and Wellbutrin XL are typically used to treat depression, while Zyban is most often prescribed as a quit smoking aid. Zyban is taken in pill form.
Taking this Medication:
- Start taking the medication one to two weeks prior to your quit date
- Begin with a dose of 150 mg every AM for 3 days, then increase to 150 mg two times a day for the duration of treatment (determined by your doctor).
How does Zyban Work?
While it isn’t understood exactly how bupropion (Zyban) works, we do know that this prescription strength
medicine alters the brain’s chemistry. The result is a reduced interest in smoking. Nicotine cravings are diminished. You should take ZYBAN as directed by your doctor.
Can I Use NRT’s with Zyban?
Zyban used in conjunction with a NRT can be a good choice for people who have a lot of trouble with nicotine withdrawal. But this should only be done under Doctor’s supervision.

Precautions. Who should not use Zyban?
Bupropion hydrochloride is not a suitable quit smoking therapy for everyone. Below is a list of conditions under which taking this drug would not be recommended:
- If you are taking Wellbutrin® SR or Wellbutrin® XL (both are bupropion HCl).
- If you are taking any other medicine containing bupropion HCl.
- If you have or have had a seizure disorder.
- If you have or have had an eating disorder.
- If you are abruptly discontinuing use of alcohol or sedatives(including benzodiazepines).
- If you are currently taking or have recently taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI).
- If you are allergic to bupropion HCl.
- If you are pregnant or nursing.
- You should not take this medication if you have an allergic reaction to bupropion.
- If you have been diagnosed with cardiovascular disease and infrequent reports of hypertension has been reported.

- Headaches
- Change in appetite
- Agitation
