New York State Smokers' Quitline

What's Holding You Back?

Smoking relaxes me

What you think is relaxation is relief from the stress of nicotine withdrawal.

I've tried before and didn't make it.

Call it practice. It usually takes a few tries before smokers quit for good.

 I'll gain weight.

About 2 out of 3 quitters will gain weight, usually 10 pounds or less. Smoking can cause more damage than some modest weight gain. If you can quit smoking, you can do anything!

I'm restless, irritable and can't concentrate when I quit.

These are signs of recovery from nicotine addiction. They may be quite strong at first but they go away with time. Using Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) can help reduce these symptoms.

I feel deprived when I quit smoking.

Try to think more about what you are gaining.
