  5. Are filtered cigarettes safer?

Filters don’t make cigarettes any safer and might even be more harmful in some ways.

So, why aren’t filters helpful? Filters do not block all the bad chemicals in smoke, and filtered smoke feels milder on the throat, making it easier to take bigger and deeper puffs.

Filters on filtered cigarettes may look clean, that’s because they’re painted white. They’re actually made of thousands of tiny fibers and, when you smoke, these fibers can come off and be inhaled into your lungs. And charcoal filters, which some cigarettes use, aren’t any better. They can leave tiny bits of charcoal in your body along with those fibers.
